What is bending? – The core method of sheet metal forming
Bending is a sheet metal forming method in which the sheet is shaped to the desired angle using a special press, known as a press brake. This method is widely used in the metal industry, especially in subcontracting services, for producing precise and dimensionally stable metal parts.
How does bending work?
In bending, the sheet is placed between tools: the upper tool is the punch, and the lower is the die. When the press pushes the sheet down into the die, it bends to the desired angle. Depending on the material, thickness, and product requirements, the bending angle and radius can be precisely adjusted.
Why is bending used?
Bending is a very popular manufacturing method because it:
- Enables precise and repeatable shapes for different materials
- Is fast and cost-effective, especially for small and medium-sized series
- Is well-suited for stainless steel, aluminium, and galvanised sheets
- Does not require welding or other joining techniques at the bends
Advantages of bending in sheet metal manufacturing
Bending is an accurate, efficient, and versatile method for forming sheet metal into the desired shape. It is a key part of modern metal subcontracting.
1. Precise and repeatable results
CNC-controlled bending enables exact control of angles and dimensions. This makes it ideal for series production and technically demanding parts with small error margins.
2. Versatility in shaping
Bending can form angles, profiles, and shapes—from simple L-profiles to complex multi-bends. Multiple parts can be produced with a single machine without extensive tool changes.
3. No need for welding at the bend
Since bending shapes the sheet mechanically without joints, it reduces the need for welding, saving time and improving structural strength in specific applications.
4. Cost-effective manufacturing method
Bending is a fast and material-efficient process that produces very little waste. This makes it an economical option for single pieces and larger production batches.
5. Suitable for multiple materials
Bending works well for various materials, such as:
- Stainless steel
- Aluminum
- Hot-dip galvanised steel
- Copper and other metals
6. Easy to integrate into the production process
Bending can be combined with other manufacturing stages, such as laser cutting, welding, and surface treatment, providing a complete solution from a single supplier, like Triotec.
