Trusting the dryer’s automation paid off – Myyrinmaa dries remotely
The playoffs of grain farming are on – they continue for those with systems in order
Jussi Myyrinmaa began farming on the family farm in 1997. He represents the ninth generation cultivating Crown surplus lands in Nurmijärvi. The farm has existed for over 200 years, since 1782. There were already two dryers on the farm. The dryer built in 1972 was reaching the end of its service life, and the capacity of the dryer acquired in 2014 was no longer sufficient as the cultivated area grew. Myyrinmaa began planning the purchase of a new dryer in 2024.
Myyrinmaa currently has about 390 hectares of harvestable land. For winter cereals the farm grows wheat and rye as well as winter oilseed rape. In spring they sow spring rapeseed, wheat, malting barley and food oats. Specialty crops also include caraway and industrial hemp.
Turnkey project brought peace of mind
Myyrinmaa began actively looking for a new dryer supplier in spring 2025. The decision to invest was reinforced by his own son’s interest in agriculture and continuing the farm.
“Besides, I think the playoffs in grain farming are on now. Those who have their systems in order will continue,” Myyrinmaa says.
Myyrinmaa requested quotes from several suppliers and ended up continuing cooperation with Mepu. The decisive factor in the choice was Mepu’s project management service, which meant the customer did not have to take care of the practical coordination of the project themselves.
“Not having to intervene in anything during the construction was the most important thing for me mentally and physically,” Myyrinmaa says with a smile.
Myyrinmaa began actively searching for a new dryer manufacturer in spring 2025. He wanted a packaged drying plant for the farm, because the old dryer stands out in the open and the elevator gets moisture in winter.
“When the elevator is frozen in winter, transferring and selling grain is not possible,” Myyrinmaa explains.
The packaged drying plant also enabled the construction of several smaller silos, which is important because of the specialty crops grown on the farm. Before the new dryer was completed, Myyrinmaa had to store grain in neighbors’ silos as well, and moving grain from place to place was laborious.
The best thing about this dryer is the automation
After threshing in autumn 2025 Myyrinmaa began excavating the foundations and making the base. In spring 2026 Mepu’s installation team arrived at the site.
“Installation went well. I really received a turnkey delivery, and I didn’t have to worry about the project. Sometimes I moved things for the construction workers, and they kept me updated about the stage of construction,” Myyrinmaa says.
“Buying the project management service from Mepu cost money, but it was worth it. I could focus on farming and didn’t have to think about who would come to the site next and at what time,” Myyrinmaa sums up.
“The best thing about this dryer is the automation,” Jussi enthuses. A full automation was implemented for Myyrinmaa’s dryer, namely Mepu’s Grain Pro control system.
“After the initial nerves I dared to trust the automation, and it has paid off. It worked right away as it should and has brought a lot of freedom. I haven’t had to go to the dryer at night, and from the combine I can follow on my laptop what is happening at the dryer. Practically I tip the grain into the receiving pit, and I don’t have to stay to monitor the dryer’s filling. You can sleep through the nights peacefully, and that has improved well-being. Once one distributor was out of action, and Mepu handled the matter remotely,” Jussi rejoices.
With the S-series, delivering grain to industry is possible in winter as well
The new dryer has two 100 t/h elevators, which make it possible to flexibly move grain between silos and dryers even during drying. Grain from the old dryer can be transferred to Mepu’s receiving pit and from there to the desired destination.
Above the receiving pit there are four fresh-grain silos equipped with fans. This keeps fresh grain in the silos more manageable and prevents it from caking. With the free elevator, 100 m³ of grain can be moved to the fresh-grain silos while the dryer is running.
With the new S-series dryer, drying is no longer a bottleneck on the farm. The drying capacity is 1,200 hectares, which according to Myyrinmaa practically corresponds to the amount he has time to thresh. This year Myyrinmaa also did freight drying.
“Previously we could not deliver grain to industry during the winter because the old dryers were located on too steep terrain. Now a truck can drive through the packaged drying plant even in winter, so I can better control when I sell the grain. Grain also no longer needs to be transferred to a neighbor’s storage,” Myyrinmaa explains.
